Apprenticeships

Want to get paid while you study? An apprenticeship could be for you.

Apprenticeships give you a great start in your chosen career. They offer a fantastic opportunity to earn while you learn, giving you the skills employers want and a nationally recognised qualification at the same time. Through a mix of on-site college attendance, visits from your college assessors, and time developing your practical skills and knowledge on the job, an apprenticeship is a great way to undertake your training.

An apprenticeship is a real job with a training programme attached. That’s why most of your time will be spent on the job. You can apply for an advertised position or approach your current employer (both new and existing staff can become apprentices)!

As an apprentice, you will:

  • Work alongside experienced staff
  • Gain job-specific skills
  • Receive training from colleagues and tutors
  • Earn a wage and get holiday pay
  • Study towards a nationally-recognised qualification

SMB College Group works with hundreds of employers across the UK to support apprentices through their training in a wide variety of sectors. An apprenticeship is a great opportunity to combine practical experience and technical knowledge.

We recently won the Nachural Entrepreneurship Award for Promoting Apprenticeships! Recognising the excellent work that the college has undertaken in working with local and national businesses to offer apprenticeships, and train and up-skill their employees - building sustainable, ambitious workforces that are well-equipped for the future. Click here to read more!

Apprenticeship FAQ’s

  • Is an apprenticeship for me?

Apprenticeships are ideal for ambitious people who are looking to gain skills and progress within their career. If you are eager to earn some money whilst studying, then an apprenticeship is a great way to achieve both at the same time. An apprenticeship is first and foremost a job with training alongside, so if you're ready to enter the world of work, or already in a role with an employer, then an apprenticeship could be the best option for you. If you're 16 or over, live in England, and are keen to earn while you learn, then get in touch with us!

  • Who can become an apprentice?

You must be 16 or over and living in England. To undertake an Apprenticeship, you will need to have a job with a contract of employment for at least 30 hours per week or have a firm offer of employment within your chosen occupational area. If you are not employed, we will match your details against any vacancies we have on file and help you apply for apprenticeship positions.

  • Why become an apprentice?

You will be paid for working and training in an area you enjoy. Being an apprentice means you will have already started on your career path with an employer who is invested in your future. It also means you learn on the job and get real-world experience in an industry you want to work in.

The minimum wage for apprentices is set by the Government and increases annually, so make sure you do your research to find out the latest rate. However, many employers do pay more than this.

  • How long is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships take between 13 months and 48 months depending on your ability, the course and your employers' requirements.

  • How will I study my apprenticeship?

How often and when you'll attend college will depend on your specific apprenticeship programme. Most apprenticeship courses are delivered 1 day a week at college or on a block release basis, where you will attend college for a week at a time in blocks. Alongside attending college, you will be visited by one of our specialist assessors, who have all worked in the industry themselves.
