My apprenticeship has helped me a lot in my career so far, and hopefully will do in the future.

Not only with learning skills based around the job and within the job, but also communication skills, teamwork skills, but also in an academic sense as well and it covers and ticks all boxes.

Being part of Redrow and having this apprenticeship has allowed me to excel in these areas and get an upper hand over competition I suppose.

Joe Wellborn is a Civil Engineering Apprentice at Redrow Homes, studying at our Stephenson Campus in Coalville. Read below about his experience!

I studied A Levels at school and looked into University and decided that wasn’t the route I wanted to go down, so looked into job applications and found one at Redrow, which I applied for, and got that. Then through that, I carried on into this apprenticeship.

For me, I chose the apprenticeship route as you can earn while you learn, effectively. On the job, learning skills, but also being paid to do that, rather than putting yourself in a position of debt with University.

I like studying at the SMB College Group as it allows me to meet various people from various different companies and groups but also the varied units across the course itself – whether that be a CAD and design unit, or a mathematics unit as we’re doing currently.

Seeing the end outcome that you yourself are a part of is something that provides great satisfaction. You may think you play a minor role in it, but that alongside with everyone else’s work that comes together for the final outcome is really good to see.

Off my experiences, personally, from studying A Levels and applying for uni even though I felt that wasn’t necessarily the route I wanted to go down, I very much took that jump with this job while still waiting on uni offers, so I would say it’s definitely worth taking and I think it’s paid off and I believe I made the right decision.

I’d massively recommend an apprenticeship – as I’ve said, I was unsure on which pathway to choose, and I took this on and I can’t say I regret it! Ultimately, an apprenticeship sets you up in a really good position.
