My favorite part about my engineering apprenticeship, especially at AB Produce, is that no two days are the same. One day could be no breakdowns - meaning working on intricate, fine details on machinery parts - and the next day could have several huge breakdowns, resulting in belt changed, stripping lines down, full nut and bolt replacements, etc. Being an engineer can be challenging and that is what makes the job interesting to me personally.

I became an engineer after being interested in fixing and constructing things for as long as I remember. My oldest memory of home DIY ‘engineering’ was replacing and rewiring a light switch and plug/plug socket when I was around 12. Engineering runs in my family also, my mom got a Jaguar Land Rover apprenticeship at 17 and stayed there for 12 years. My family have always wanted me to start working in a long-term occupation that I enjoy. After a few jobs such as a market trader for 3 years and a chef for 18 months, engineering was the best route to go down as it is an occupation that will never die out.

There are so many components such as mechanical, electronic, electrical, hydraulics and pneumatics. Along with these components you can also learn to use complex machinery such as welders, grinders, forklifts, MEWP and other ‘dangerous’ components. I have just passed my cherry picker test along with a fire marshal course which I now have added responsibilities with. When I turn 18, I have a first aid course lined up along with a forklift license test.

My future aspirations include me pursuing a career as an avionics technician in the Royal Air Force, I have wanted to become a recruit since I was in high school. There are so many benefits to becoming a soldier, the RAF being the best armed force regiment to join from my own research and for my personal self. I’d love the idea of being able to travel the world, be on the property ladder from a young age as well as having the best quality training available to date. Not only this but I would be serving my country and implementing positive change, I will also be earning a substantial wage while travelling the world. However, due to my personal mental health deterioration in 2020 I had to be put on antidepressants to maintain a stable living. Due to being on medication for depression it placed a huge set back, and after applying to both the RAF and Army I was unfortunately declined my application. On the bright side, I have been on sertraline for 2 years now and have return to a stable and comfortable wellbeing and plan to slowly come off them in good time. This should allow me to pursue my dream career later once I meet the adequate health requirements soon.

My short period prospects include passing my college course and becoming a qualified engineer in mechatronics, hopefully climbing the ranks and becoming the best in my field.
