Becoming an apprentice has helped me better myself and my career path, as this pathway could take me into many job roles.

I chose SMB College Group for my apprenticeship as I was supported well in previous years by the progress tutors and head of course when help was needed.

Here's what Suranne told us about her time studying at our Stephenson Campus!

Why did you choose to study an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship at SMB Group is the right path for a young female looking to join the Construction industry with no experience and will open a lifetime of opportunities to learn a variety of information and unlock the chance to break off into different job sectors. I studied Level 3 Construction in the Built Environment at SMB Group before I joined the Level 4 apprenticeship however, I still had little experience in the industry before starting my apprenticeship, although I always had a passion to be working in construction.

Why did you choose to do your apprenticeship with SMB College Group?

I chose SMB college for my apprenticeship as I was supported well in previous years by the progress tutors and head of course when help was needed. The college is also based close to the site I’m based on (East Midlands Gateway Plot 5) so it’s not a problem to get to.

What has your experience been like so far? Have you enjoyed being on-site with your employer?

I have enjoyed my apprenticeship so far, as sitting behind a desk all day isn’t for me so the balance between work and college time balances out evenly for me as I can go straight back into work when my block is over, however, it is important you know how to transfer from work mode to understanding your assignments in college. My experience with the college has been good knowing if I need help the help is there and my voice will always be heard.

What is your favourite thing about your apprenticeship?

During my apprenticeship, I have enjoyed being challenged to learn new skills within an industry I didn’t know a lot about. I have also enjoyed being able to socialise whilst still being educated in the process.

What are your career ambitions? Has your apprenticeship helped you to start working towards these ambitions?

My ambition has always been to become a Health & Safety Adviser, however I went in for the Site Supervisor role as an apprentice and figured there is a lot of health & safety within this job role alongside more involvement in site-specific tasks. Making the decision of becoming an apprentice has helped me better myself and my career path as this could take me into many job roles.

Any advice for people who are considering an apprenticeship?

My advice to someone that is considering an apprenticeship would be to do it as it becomes a working life while being educated in an industry you are interested in. On the other hand, you will also need to find the balance between work life and assignments but you will get support with this along the way at SMB!
