Brooksby Melton College student, Megan Summers, is this year’s deserving recipient of the Brooksby Horticulture Award!
Megan, who currently studies Level 3 Countryside Management, was chosen as this year’s recipient due to her exemplary contribution to Brooksby, both as a student and an ambassador of land-based education. She began her studies with a Level 3 Horticulture qualification, which she completed in 2019, and has since endeavoured to continue her land-based education by beginning her Level 3 Countryside Management qualification in September 2019.
The Brooksby Horticulture Award is an annual prize presented to a deserving land-based industries student by the Leicestershire and Rutland Gardens Trust. The award aims to recognise students who display outstanding commitment to their land-based education. As the winner of this award, Megan has received a £100 cheque, which will enable her to buy books and equipment to aid her studies.
When speaking about her win, Megan said ‘As a student that has completed Level 3 Horticulture, achieving a Distinction***, and now undertaking Level 3 Countryside Management, I feel so lucky, privileged and proud to have been chosen to receive this prestigious award. As a student coming to the end of my education at Brooksby Melton College, I have chosen to spend my award money on books to further my education – to broaden my horticultural and countryside knowledge. This academic knowledge will aid me in achieving my goal to be a great estates manager.’
Brooksby Lecturer, Elizabeth Hammond, said ‘Megan is an excellent ambassador for horticulture and conservation, and has made herself and the college proud, always bringing a positive attitude to her studies and the industry. She is an enthusiastic and passionate learner, who is now pursuing her career in Estates Management at Misterton Hall alongside continuing her education here at Brooksby.’
Recognised as a specialist LANDEX college, Brooksby is home to the 850 acre Brooksby estate, giving land-based students the opportunity to gain a wide variety of experience and skills. Students learn in state-of-the-art facilities such as glasshouses with automatic vent and temperature controls, which ensure the perfect conditions for growing plants. In addition, the Brooksby Campus features over twelve acres of gardens, which house a wide range of plant species for students to learn from.
