A selection of SMB College Group Apprentices are taking part in a residential voyage with Tall Ships Youth Trust this week, where they’ll learn how to sail, culminating in them competing in The Barratt Challenger Race at the end of the week.

The group, who study at the college’s Stephenson Campus in Coalville, are all on Construction Apprenticeship programmes with the country’s largest housebuilder, Barratt Developments.

Hailing from locations from all across the UK, the Apprentices have been split in to two teams and will go head-to-head in the competition on Friday 24th March, racing from Isle of Wight to Portsmouth onboard of the Trust’s iconic 72ft Challenger yachts.

The SMB College Group apprentices taking part are Gregory Kemp, Oskar Browning, Becca Vickers, Stan Mayne and James Randall are taking part on Challenger 2, and Geoff Llewelyn, Callum Pettit, Owen Goodland, Kye Wickett and Alex Hibberd are on Challenger 3.

The group will also get the opportunity to learn all about sustainability and the importance of protecting the environment during this trip, as well as benefitting from leadership training at Tall Ships Youth Trust’s Portsmouth Hub.

Carolyn Haines, Director of Construction at SMB College Group, said ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for our Barratt Developments Apprentices, who study on a range of Construction apprenticeship programmes with us at our Stephenson Campus. This trip will not only give them an experience of a lifetime and teach them about two of the college’s key values (sustainability and resilience), but will also enable them to further develop key career skills such as teamwork, communication and professionalism. We wish all apprentices who are taking part the best of luck!’.

Since 2019, Tall Ships Youth Trust has partnered with Barratt to offer trainees and apprentices an innovative experience which focuses on developing the skills required for employment such as team building, resilience and leadership in a unique and challenging environment.

The Barratt Developments Trade Programme is a ground-breaking residential apprenticeship, intensively delivered over 18 months in close partnership with SMB College Group and Tall Ships Youth Trust.
