Sustainability is one of the most important core values at SMB College Group – that’s why the Engineering team have been going above and beyond to embed it into their curriculum with the use of exciting new technologies.

The team, who are based at the college’s Stephenson Campus in Coalville, have been utilising their Engineering skills, alongside the college’s 3D printing equipment, to build prototypes, concepts, models, and designs for their Engineering projects.

Their journey began with the creation of fun models and figures such as superheroes, mesh rabbits, and bearings, and have now progressed into repairing items that people would usually throw away.

For example, Engineering Lecturer, Dave Nicholson, has been supporting the college’s Level 2 & 3 Engineering students to design and model replacement battery covers and tool/equipment holders from across the college’s wide range of curriculum areas – resulting in a positive impact across several subject areas.

The Engineering department intends to make more use of waste plastic and coffee cup lids from the college canteen for further 3D projects, with exciting plans to include the wider community with our new recycling technology in 2023!

In addition, the college’s Engineering Additive Manufacturing students at Level 2, Level 3, and higher, will all be getting involved in creating more replacement parts for a variety of industries using recycled plastic as they learn throughout their courses.

We are so proud to be inspiring future generations to be more sustainable and influencing their mindset to repair, recycle, and reuse!
