British long-distance runner, Gemma Steel, recently returned to where it all started to officially open a brand-new Learning Resource Centre at SMB College Group’s Stephenson Campus.
Gemma, who achieved a Distinction in Sport at the Stephenson Campus in Coalville in 2008, has since become a gold medallist at the European Cross-Country Championships and, more recently, a bronze medallist at the Cardiff Commonwealth Half Marathon.
Students and staff gathered in the ‘LRC’ and enjoyed a selection of sweet treats and hot drinks to celebrate the brand-new facilities the campus now offers – including a variety of books, computers, guides, and access to the campus’ Student Services, Work Experience & Careers, Progress Tutor, and Library teams.
Learning & Information Resources Team Leader, Amanda Williamson, expressed that the new LRC facilities present a great opportunity for students to access support with their studies, applications, work experience, and more.
Assistant Principal, Jon Laud, added “Amanda and the team have done a great job of transforming the space to provide up-to-date resources to support all students on campus in a welcoming environment.”
He added, “It was fantastic to welcome back an alumna to cut the ribbon – and the launch saw record-quick consumption of lemon drizzle cake!”
SMB College Group now has a Learning Resource Centre at each of its three campuses, offering support, advice, and guidance, to everyone who attends the college.
