Two Supported Interns from BMC have been offered jobs at Marston’s Flying Childers, a traditional pub and restaurant near Melton Mowbray. The interns, Callum and Stacey, started their Supported Internships in the Flying Childers catering department in September 2018. Since then, they have both made excellent progress and have been offered part-time Catering Assistant jobs at the pub. Anna-Leah Knight, BMC Job Coach, said ‘Callum started the year with a strong desire to learn and a fantastic attitude towards work. Once on placement, Callum quickly made a positive impression on his employer, proving to be a hard-working and dedicated addition to the team. With clear instructions and support Callum has grasped the skills required to be a kitchen assistant and is now exploring more advanced roles within catering. He is a shining example of the potential for success that our interns have. Meaningful work experience and training offered by the Internship program has been fundamental in helping Callum to achieve paid employment. It has been a pleasure to help him grow. ‘For Stacey, there have been a number of challenges to overcome in order to make the most of her internship and gain employment. She has been working hard to improve her reading skills, which are enabling her to take customers’ orders and use the till system. Recently Stacey has taken on some paid weekend work with the employer to compliment her internship. Working on busier weekend days but in a familiar setting is helping Stacey to manage her anxiety and put the skills she is learning during her placement into practice in a paid role. Her willingness to work and learn combined with the employers support is helping her go from strength to strength and work her way toward a positive future.’ Supported Internships are specially designed, government funded programmes that allow young people with learning difficulties to gain hands-on work experience in the workplace, fully supported by a job coach. The employer and job coach work together to develop a tailored work programme based on the interns needs, with the aim of equipping them with the skills they need for the work place.
