Tom Walters, 33, completed his Horticulture apprenticeship with Brooksby Melton College earlier this year, and has now secured a Head Gardener role at The Old Hall in Market Overton! Whilst completing his Level 2 apprenticeship in Horticulture, Tom was employed as an Apprentice Gardener at Hambleton Hall in Oakham. After successfully completing his qualification with BMC, he was offered the role of Head Gardener at The Old Hall in Market Overton, Rutland. Tom has been working at The Old Hall since May 2019, with his duties including pruning and planting, changing borders, mowing lawns, maintaining the kitchen garden, representing the Old Hall at Open Garden events, and more. Tom said ‘ I decided to pursue a career in Horticulture because I was working in the retail sector and wanted a change. I had always enjoyed gardening as a hobby, so I thought why not turn what I enjoyed most into a job? ‘I chose to do an apprenticeship because I liked the idea of learning on-the-job. My apprenticeship gave me the opportunity to gain hands-on, practical experience within the industry whilst attending college one day per week to develop my theory knowledge. ‘I would definitely recommend doing an apprenticeship because you get so much out of it – it’s great to be in the workplace, learning the job first-hand.’ BMC Horticulture Training Officer, Carla Tewley, added ‘It has been a pleasure working with Tom, watching his confidence grow and seeing him progress in the Horticultural world.’ If you want to follow in Tom’s footsteps, BMC offers both apprenticeships and full-time courses in Horticulture, in addition to a variety of short courses and Royal Horticultural Society qualifications.
