A brand-new exciting dance theatre show, The Human Condition, is coming to Melton Theatre for one night only on the 27th April 2023. This unique dance theatre piece will feature SMB College Group’s 3rd year BA Performing Arts students in collaboration with professional outfit, CTC Dance Company.

The Human Condition explores identity and what it means to be human. Despite its deep themes, the piece is made accessible to all through the medium of dance theatre. The show follows an ‘A Christmas Carol’ style narrative as the performers answer the question ‘What makes us human?’

BA Performing Arts student, Megan Goodman, said of the show ‘Working with CTC Dance Company has been a really great experience not just in terms of learning choreography and creating a performance, but also seeing how their creative process is a key part of their ethos.’

‘Exploring topics that are really important to talk about, in this case identity, has been really eye-opening, and being able to talk about such topics in a warm and open environment has been essential. Luke Cartwright, our choreographer, has also been amazing. He's really pushed us out of our comfort zone to achieve more and learn more about ourselves as dancers and performers. We're also looking forward to working with Christopher Tendai - with him being an alumnus of the college it makes the experience extra special!’

From conception through to staging and performing, the show has been a work of collaboration with CTC Dance Company and the 3rd year students as part of their final BA Professional Performance Project.

CTC Dance Company was founded in 2017 by SMB College Group alumnus, Christopher Tendai. After studying Musical Theatre at the college’s Melton Campus, Chris went on to perform on the West End as part of the original cast of Hamilton, West Side Story and Cabaret. He set up the company to push the boundaries of what we know dance to be, and produce narratives on topics such as identity and mental health awareness whilst creating a safe and open rehearsal environment for their performers to discuss such topics.

If you would like to see a show that is new, creative, innovative and meaningful, this is one not to be missed.
