Seven SMB College Group Apprentices, along with Lecturer Michelle Thom and Grounds Manager Nathan Craddock, recently visited Leicester General Hospital’s Evington Centre to spruce up their therapy garden ready for summer.

The apprentices, who all study Horticulture at the college’s Brooksby Campus, carried out a series of routine Horticultural maintenance tasks such as weeding, pruning, lawn mowing, removing fallen leaves from the previous autumn.

Nathan Craddock, Grounds Manager at SMB College Group, said ‘We’re really proud of our Horticulture Apprentices for their dedication and willingness to help out our wider community within Leicestershire. This has been a great experience for them to use their skills and knowledge of the industry to make a real difference for this worthy cause.’

Kate Morriss, Occupational Therapist and Therapy Team Lead at the Evington Centre said ‘A huge thank you to Nathan, Michelle and the team of polite and friendly SMB College Group Apprentices for transforming our garden. The amount of work completed was fantastic and will make all the difference to both patients and staff here at the Centre. We look forward to building on what’s already been achieved and continue improving our garden with more sensory plants and accessible planters.

The Evington Centre is part of the Leicester General Hospital site and offers care for older people, including services for Older People’s Mental Health.
