Last month, SMB College Group hosted Brooksby’s Strongest Farmer!

The competition was held at the College’s Brooksby Campus, their 850-acre specialised land-based campus, which has been a leading provider of agricultural courses for generations.

Agriculture student, Angela Harris organised the event. She said ‘The idea came about because I competed in Britain's Fittest Farmer last year, which is a competition run by Farmer's Weekly to raise awareness about the importance of physical and mental health, especially in farming.

‘I thought it would be good to have a mini college version and raise some money for Pick-ups For Peace – which is a fundraising organisation run by UK farmers aiming to raise money, pick-ups and equipment to deliver to the frontline in Ukraine.’

The competition consisted of a series of activities testing the strength of Brooksby’s farmers:

  1. A minute-long plank followed by as many press-ups as possible in one minute
  2. Farmer's carry - running with dumbbells up and down the track as fast as you can
  3. Jumping on and off straw bales and burpees - as many as possible in one minute
  4. Lifting a dumbbell from ground to overhead - as many as possible in one minute
  5. Tyre flips
  6. And finally, a wheelbarrow and piggy back race

Two teams came first so a tie-break activity which involved flipping tyres over a net was in order to decide the overall winner. After this final task, Agriculture students Cieran Greenwood and Charlie Freckingham were named the overall winners of the day!
