SMB College Group’s Curriculum Quality Programme and Project Lead, Alex Gray, recently delivered one of the Keynote talks Landex’s Agriculture Lecturers & Farm Managers Network CPD Event at Wiltshire College, Lackham.

Alex spoke about regenerative agriculture in land-based colleges, with an emphasis on facilitating a cultural transition through embedding cross-curricular learning in land-based projects.

Alex said, ‘I’m pleased to be a speaker at this event as I feel passionately that land-based colleges have the potential to play a significant role in the positive development of the culture of agriculture towards a holistic way of farming. It’s so important that we safeguard food security whilst building in climate and biodiversity resilience at the same time.

‘At SMB College Group’s Brooksby Campus, we have worked hard to embed our teaching within real life projects, from transitioning to regenerative agriculture, river restoration and ventures into Biodiversity net gain schemes. It’s a really engaging way to teach and equips our learners with the mindset required to farm productively in the 21st century.”

The aim of the Landex CPD event was to bring together all those involved in the teaching of agriculture for professional development centred around shifts within the industry. Exploring themes from traditional skills to advanced technology, the health and wellbeing of the farming sector, sustainable farming practices, campus and curriculum changes.

Globally we are seeing shifts in the demands made of the farming sector, and educators help shape the habits and behaviours of the next generation of sustainable farmers is critical to pedagogy and practice across agricultural education. Agriculture colleagues recognise changing times, and the event challenges lecturers to consider how to meet the ambitions of the sector.

The event included include an opportunity to tour the venue’s farm, attend speaker events, and participate in Q&As and discussion groups.

SMB College Group have been undergoing an array of sustainability and regeneration projects at their 850-acre specialist land-based Brooksby Campus, aiming to prepare students to be at the forefront of their industry whilst protecting the future through sustainable practices.
