Last week, SMB College Group attended and sponsored the Cold-Eating Savoury Pie category at the annual British Pie Awards held locally in Melton Mowbray!

The British Pie Awards are now in their 15th year and are held to celebrate the nation’s most delicious pies – from the very traditional to the new and innovative.

Over 900 pies were entered into 23 different classes/types of pie, including traditional favourites and newcomers like Vegan and Gluten Free Pies, and then judged by 140 judges.

SMB College Group sponsored Class 3, the award for best Cold-Eating Savoury Pie. The winner of the category was Dickinson & Morris ‘Kings Coronation Pie’ from Samworths Savoury Pastry in Leicester.

The ‘Supreme Champion’ and winner of the day was the Moo & Blue Pie from Brockleby’s in Asfordby. Dr Matthew O’Callaghan Chairman of the Awards said; “this is a great celebration of the nation’s favourite food. There were some outstanding pies entered from the Tip of Scotland to the Toe of England.  The Supreme Champion or ‘Pie of Pies’ was a worthy winner. Called Moo & Blue it was a Beef, Ale and Stilton Pie made by Brockleby’s in Leicestershire.”

Pie is considered a British delicacy, internationally imported, beloved and made hundreds of different ways. The Melton Mowbray Pork Pie has gained PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) status in the European Union, a way of recognising a specific geographical area that produces high-quality food and drink, alongside the Cornish Pasty and Forfar Birdie.
