SMB College Group’s T Level Business students, who study at the college’s Stephenson Campus in Coalville, recently had a great time recently visiting Sheffield Hallam University!

The students visited the University for a ‘day-in-the-life’ experience, looking at what it takes to be a ‘Built Environment’ student; the aim of the visit being to expand their horizons and explore how their Business qualification can be applied in different sectors.

The students from SMB College Group got stuck in with all of the activities on the day, and even claimed victory in a challenge against other colleges!

The challenge involved designing and constructing a student accommodation facility, following a specific brief and taking into consideration elements such as cost, income, design, timings and testing.

The students were designated individual roles within their team: Architect, Quantity Surveyor, Building Surveyor, Construction Project Manager and Resident Engineer.

The judges were looking for best overall proposal, using the most cost-effective materials, to get as highest income as possible from facilities with interesting sketch proposals - and the top floor has to have a glass roof!

Students were given 30 minutes to construct and, once they were done, the buildings were tested for ‘snow loading’ and earthquake resistance… And SMB College Group’s T Level Business students were able to construct the winning building!

As the only students in attendance on the day who study Business (and not Construction/Built Environment), their win perfectly showcases how studying Business is ideal for a career in a variety of industries and stretches across all sectors!
