Many of the students who take this programme are working or volunteering in nurseries, schools or special needs settings. Others will come straight from level 3 study such as A levels or Level 3 Diplomas.
The course aims to develop the knowledge and skills required to access supervisory and management roles in a range of Early Years and Young People's settings. Theory will be applied to practice with an emphasis on the development of self-reflective practitioners.
Students are to be in paid employment or voluntary work for a minimum of two days per week in an appropriate setting for the duration of the course.
Our teaching staff come from fantastic and varied professional careers bringing a breadth of knowledge and experience to SMB College Group and our students. All lecturers are qualified teachers. They have all worked as specialists in their area, previously working at other colleges as lecturers, in schools as teaching assistants (SEN or otherwise), End Point assessors or nursery managers. They are qualified at degree level or above in relevant field such as SEND PAthways, Early Childhood Studies, Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, Early Years and others.

What will I learn?
During the course a range of subjects, theories and approaches will be explored. Theory, practice, and reflection will provide you with a wealth of ideas and approaches to draw upon in the creation and facilitation of your own work.
After initial grounding in higher education study skills and reflection, you will go on to educational curriculums and child development management in the first year of study. Reflection is a key element in all modules, and will support you to identify areas of personal and professional development to improve practice.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be through a variety of methods including case studies, reports, essays, presentations, creation of artefacts, intervention proposals and reflective reports.

Where could this course lead to?
On completion of the foundation degree students have the opportunity to progress onto a range of Top-Up (Level 6) qualifications, remaining with the SMB Group for a Top-Up in Childhood, Education and SEND or progressing onto Top-Up courses at De Montfort University or into a PGCE teaching course. Progression in the work environment may lead to supervisory or management roles, and on progression and completion of the Level 6 (Top-Up) into graduate positions in the work place.

What qualifications or experience do I need?
To access the course, you will need to have a Level 3 Diploma, in a relevant subject such as Early Years, Childcare Education or similar and a GCSE in English at grade 4 or above. However, for perspective students that have extensive experience or alternative qualifications consideration will be given case by case. As this is a work-based degree you will also need to be employed or volunteering for a minimum of two days per week, in an appropriate environment such as an Early Years setting, school, care or specialist provision.
