The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (L5DET) is widely recognised as the standard of teacher training required for the post-14 sector, including further education colleges, sixth form colleges, other adult learning providers and employers (apprenticeships). It is a teaching qualification which extends into investigation and research into current practice, theories and models relating to education and training.

This two-year, part-time programme will help student teachers to develop the underpinning knowledge, skills and behaviours required to deliver excellence in effective learning and assessment strategies in a range of educational settings. It prepares student teachers for all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing teaching and learning in the post-14 sector, and is suitable for in-service and pre-service candidates, who can evidence a formal commitment to complete a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice as part of the qualification.

The programme will help student teachers to become effective, professional teaching practitioners who are able to gain employment in their chosen subject specialism as teachers or trainers, in a range of educational settings.

The L5DET programme is delivered in-person, at Stephenson and Melton campuses. The location of weekly, face-to-face taught sessions will change each semester (September to January, January to May), therefore candidates must be able to travel to each site as required.

Sessions take place weekly on Tuesday evenings from 3pm to 8.30pm.

Wider professional practice and development ? Inclusive practice ? Understanding and managing behaviours in a learning environment ? Evaluating learning programmes ? Preparing for the Coaching and Mentoring role ? Action research in education The qualification will be assessed by a combination of formal written assessments, a portfolio of teaching practice and a minimum of 8 observations of teaching practice over two years. The programme prioritises the application of theory into practice, alongside development of the ?reflective practitioner?, and aligns with the Education & Training Foundation Professional Standards for teaching practitioners in the post-14 sector. In order to achieve the qualification, student teachers on this L5DET programme are required to find time outside of college and any employment to complete the required assessment tasks.
