Engineering Operatives are predominantly involved in engineering operations which are key to the success of the Manufacturing and Engineering sector allowing employers to grow their business while developing a work force with the relevant skills and knowledge to enhance the sustain the sector.

The role covers a wide range of specific skills sets that can be transferred across the manufacturing engineering industry during the course of your career. Dependent on the sector that you are employed there may be subtle differences in terms of composition and application of the job role specific skills and knowledge, however the core skills and knowledge will be the same regardless of the sector/area you work in.

Maintenace covers:

  • Maintenance planning
  • Diagnostic and fault finding techniques
  • Specific safe working practices, maintenance procedures and environmental regulations that need to be observed.
  • Carryout fault location on appropriate equipment using suitable maintenance diagnostic techniques.
  • Carryout maintenance activities in line with work instructions.
  • Carryout tests on the maintained equipment in accordance with test schedule/defined test procedures.
  • Follow appropriate completion activities and restore equipment to service by replacing or repairing components.

  • How will I learn?
    Our industry experienced staff will share with you their knowledge and experience of working in the engineering sector. They will use many different types of exciting interactive teaching methods to ensure your preferred method of learning is covered. You will experience classroom based learning as well as workshop based learning on industry standard equipment.
  • How will I be assessed?
    Throughout the course you will be assessed by practical tasks in college, online tests, written assignments and work placed assessments/tasks. There will be an end point assessment conducted by engineering experts outside college. The EPA will include a Practical Observation which will be carried out at the apprentice?s place of work or an in-centre practical assessment area. There will be a professional discussion, this is to enable the apprentice to showcase how they have carried out the role of an Engineering Operative, integrating the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected. The apprentice will also build and submit a Reflective Portfolio this will show examples of work they undertaken. The reflective portfolio will be used to inform the professional discussion through which the apprentice will demonstrate competence of the broad range of knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • Where could this course lead to?
    Level 3 Apprenticeship in Metal Fabrication, Plate Welder, Engineering technician, Mechatronics Maintenance Technician, Product Design and Development Technician, Toolmaker and Tool and Die Maintenance Technician Technical Support Technician, Maintenance and operations engineering technician or Engineering fitted.   • What qualifications or experience do I need?
    4 GCSEs at Grade 3 or above which should include English and Maths or a suitable qualification at Level 1 with a merit grade. Students with lower grades or relevant experience will also be considered, subject to an additional assessment and/or a supporting reference from tutor, school or employer. You will need to be employed in the sector with a contract of employment.
  • How long is the course?
    The course is planned over 18 months, in addition 3 months for the EPA phase.
