Written by employers within the automotive retail industry, the Autocare Technician Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard provides learners with a fantastic start to their automotive career.

Apprentices can gain expertise not only in the technical elements of the role but also learn excellent telephone, customer handling and effective sales skills.

An Autocare Technician carries out a range of services and repairs to cars, car derived vans and light goods vehicles, working in a 'Fast-Fit' Centre, which may be part of a national chain or independent garage. The technician requires a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills, and will use a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify & repair simple system faults.

  • What will I learn?
    • Tyre legislation and technical information including EU Tyre labelling, Tyre Pressure Monitoring systems, sidewall markings, homologated fitments relating to cars, car derived vans and light goods vehicles.
    • Fundamentals of specific vehicle systems including steering & suspension, braking systems, battery & charging systems, exhaust systems and Air-Conditioning systems.
    • Vehicle 4-wheel geometry principles.
    • Basic consumer legislation relevant to the occupation.
    • Appropriate Health & Safety legislation and requirements for the workplace.
    • Hybrid/Electric Vehicle system and safe working procedures.
    • Data protection requirements to protect customer and payment information.
    • General sales principles including, identifying customer & vehicle needs, presenting solutions, closing the sale and dealing with buying resistance.
    • How the business works and how you contribute to the overall results, demonstrating commercial awareness.
    • How to carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance using manufacturers specifications or approved schedules, using vehicle specific data and meeting legal requirements.
    • The importance of following work place procedures and the consequences of not doing so.
  • How will I learn?
    Our industry experienced staff will share with you their knowledge and experience of working in the engineering sector. They will use many different types of exciting interactive teaching methods to ensure your preferred method of learning is covered. You will experience classroom based learning as well as workshop based learning on industry standard equipment.
  • How will I be assessed?
    Throughout the course you will be assessed by practical tasks in college, written assignments and work placed assessments/tasks. There will be an end point assessment conducted by engineering experts outside college. The EPA includes two multi choice knowledge tests, a professional discussion and a set of practical tasks, assessed in the EPA workshop by an external assessor.
  • Where could this course lead to?
    Successful completion of this apprenticeship could lead to Higher Education courses or a Higher Apprenticeship at level 4 or 5.
  • What qualifications or experience do I need?
    GCSE Grade 9-4 Maths and English (certificates to be seen by lecturer and Functional Skills tutors for exemption purposes). You will also need a job in the sector in which you have a contract of employment.
  • How long is the course?
    The course is planned over 30 months, in addition 3 months for the EPA phase.
